Answers on charging marine lithium batteries: alternator protection, DC-DC chargers, shore chargers, generators and outboard charging.

Charging is where most lithium conversions go wrong, because a LiFePO4 bank keeps accepting high current where lead-acid would have tapered. That single behavioural difference is behind the majority of the questions below.

Do marine lithium batteries need a special charger?

They need a charger with settings and behaviour suitable for the specific battery system. An old lead-acid charger may have equalisation or voltage behaviour that is inappropriate. Always check the battery manufacturer's required charge voltages and control method.

Do I need to replace my shore charger when converting to lithium?

Not always. Some existing chargers have a suitable lithium profile or configurable voltages. Others do not. Verify charging voltage, absorption behaviour, float behaviour, equalisation functions and whether the BMS can control or safely disconnect the charger.

Do I need a DC-DC charger from the alternator?

A DC-DC charger is one common way to limit alternator load and provide controlled lithium charging, especially on smaller existing alternators. Larger systems may use externally regulated alternators or other integrated approaches. The correct choice depends on engine, alternator and bank size.

Can a lithium battery damage an alternator?

The risk is usually sustained high alternator load and heat, not the lithium chemistry physically damaging it. Lithium can accept high charge current for longer than lead-acid, so an alternator that previously relaxed after a short bulk period may run near maximum output for much longer.

How big should a DC-DC charger be?

Size it from the alternator's safe sustained output, cable run, battery charge limits and desired recharge time. Bigger is not always safer. The engine still needs current for its own systems, and alternator thermal capacity must be respected.

Can I charge lithium directly from an outboard motor?

Sometimes, but compatibility depends on the outboard charging system and battery manufacturer. Small outboards may have limited or unregulated charging outputs. Check both sides rather than assuming any alternator output is suitable for direct lithium charging.

Can the BMS turn off the alternator?

Some integrated systems can signal regulators or open contactors to stop charging before the battery disconnects. Simpler drop-in batteries may only disconnect internally. Sudden disconnect behaviour must be considered when designing charging sources.

Can lithium batteries stay connected to shore power all month?

They can be used in shore-connected systems, but charger settings and battery manufacturer guidance matter. Avoid assuming lead-acid float practices are automatically ideal for lithium.

Should I buy a battery with CAN communication?

CAN can be valuable in integrated systems where the battery communicates with inverter-chargers, displays and control equipment. It is less important for a simple standalone bank. Check protocol compatibility rather than assuming every CAN device talks to every other one.

What is closed-loop lithium charging?

Closed-loop systems allow the BMS to communicate desired charge limits or state information to compatible chargers and inverters. This can improve control, but compatibility and failure behaviour need to be understood.

What is open-loop lithium charging?

Open-loop charging uses configured voltage and current limits without direct BMS communication. It can work well when designed correctly, but chargers should be set conservatively and BMS shutdown should remain a last protective layer rather than normal charge control.

Do I need a generator after installing lithium and solar?

Not necessarily, but a generator can provide valuable recovery during extended poor weather or high-load periods. Whether you need one depends on daily consumption, solar area, alternator capacity and cruising region.

Will lithium reduce generator runtime?

Often yes, because lithium can accept high charge rates through much of the charging cycle. The benefit is greatest when the charger is large enough to use the generator efficiently and the battery bank permits the current.

Can I charge lithium from a portable generator?

Normally the generator powers an appropriate AC battery charger or inverter-charger. Do not connect generator AC output directly to a battery. Marine use also introduces ventilation, fuel, exhaust and carbon-monoxide considerations.

Can hydrogeneration charge a lithium bank?

Yes. Hydrogenerators can be valuable offshore because they generate while sailing. Their controller and shutdown behaviour must be compatible with the battery system.

Can I charge lithium from solar, alternator and shore power at the same time?

Yes, if all charging sources are correctly configured and total current remains within the battery's allowable charge rate. Integrated systems may coordinate sources; simpler systems rely on appropriate set points.

How long does it take to charge a 400Ah lithium battery?

At 12.8V, 400Ah is about 5.12kWh. Replacing 4kWh with a charger delivering a real 1kW into the bank takes a little over four hours plus tapering or system losses. Charging time should be calculated from missing kWh, not only Ah.

How long does it take to charge a 10kWh bank from a 120A alternator?

At roughly 14V, 120A is about 1.7kW before losses, but the alternator may not safely sustain full output. If only 1.2kW reaches the bank continuously, replacing 8kWh takes roughly 6.7 hours. Real thermal limits can make it longer.

What should I upgrade first when converting from AGM?

Start with an electrical audit. Identify batteries, chargers, alternator, cabling, protection, inverter, solar controllers and starter-bank arrangement. The first purchase may need to be charging or protection hardware rather than the batteries themselves.

Should I carry a spare lithium battery offshore?

A full spare house battery may be impractical. More useful redundancy may be a separate start battery, emergency electronics battery, portable power pack, multiple charging sources and the ability to isolate a failed parallel module.

Do I need a marine electrician for lithium installation?

For significant lithium conversions, especially systems involving shore power, large inverters, alternator changes or commercial vessels, competent professional design and installation is strongly advisable. Applicable licensing and regulatory requirements depend on the work and jurisdiction.

What should I do before a long passage with lithium batteries?

Fully test charging sources, alarms, BMS shutdown behaviour, alternator temperature, reserve mode, critical-load backup and energy consumption during a shakedown passage. Carry diagrams and spares before relying on the system offshore.

Can I replace an AGM with lithium?

Possibly, but the charging, alternator, BMS, fuse, cable and battery-location design should be reviewed.

Can I use my existing alternator?

Sometimes, but alternator protection and regulation must be reviewed because lithium can demand high current for long periods.

Do I need a DC-DC charger?

Not always, but it is a common way to control alternator charging in mixed starter/house systems.
