Heat, Cold and Marine Lithium Batteries
Understand how Australian heat and cold affect LiFePO4 charging, battery life, BMS protection and marine installation.
Heat
Australian boats can experience severe compartment temperatures, especially in Queensland, the Northern Territory, northern Western Australia, closed yachts on moorings and engine rooms after shutdown.
Battery temperature is not the same as outside air temperature.
Heat can reduce battery life and can push equipment toward protection limits.
Cold
Many LiFePO4 systems restrict charging at low cell temperatures.
The exact threshold is manufacturer-specific. For example, current Victron Lithium Smart documentation specifies a minimum charging temperature of +5C for that product family.
Do not take one brand's threshold and apply it to every battery.
Cold-charge protection is particularly relevant for Tasmania, Victorian winter cruising and vessels travelling to colder climates.
Installation approach
Monitor actual battery temperature. Useful features include BMS temperature sensors, charger low-temperature control, ventilation, avoiding hot engine-room locations and remote temperature alarms.
Make the installation verifiable
A credible marine installation should be inspectable, documented and recoverable after a protection event. The battery label alone cannot show whether fault current, isolation, charging control, mounting and essential services have been addressed.
- Document cable sizes, protection ratings, isolation points, charging settings and BMS warning or shutdown logic.
- Confirm that terminals are protected, equipment is restrained and the location is suitable for heat, water and service access.
- Have the completed system commissioned and retain the drawings, settings, test results and equipment manuals aboard.
