Are Marine Lithium Batteries Waterproof? Understanding IP Ratings
Learn what marine battery IP ratings mean and why IP65, IP67 or IP68 does not automatically make an entire lithium installation salt-water proof.
"Waterproof" is often used too casually in marine advertising.
The correct questions are:
- what is the battery enclosure IP rating?
- under what test conditions?
- are the terminals protected?
- are communication ports sealed?
- are cable glands included in the rating?
- does the rating still apply after installation?
- what does the manufacturer say about salt-water exposure?
- what happens if the compartment floods?
Common IP ratings

An IP67 case does not mean the terminals can sit in seawater, communication plugs can remain open or the warranty covers submersion.
Marine installation principle
Install batteries where water is unlikely to reach them.
A good battery compartment should consider bilge-water pathways, leaking deck fittings, freshwater tanks, watermaker plumbing, cockpit drains, air-conditioning condensate, engine cooling hoses, seawater strainers and hull penetrations.
Make the installation verifiable
A credible marine installation should be inspectable, documented and recoverable after a protection event. The battery label alone cannot show whether fault current, isolation, charging control, mounting and essential services have been addressed.
- Document cable sizes, protection ratings, isolation points, charging settings and BMS warning or shutdown logic.
- Confirm that terminals are protected, equipment is restrained and the location is suitable for heat, water and service access.
- Have the completed system commissioned and retain the drawings, settings, test results and equipment manuals aboard.
