Answers on sizing a marine lithium bank: how many amp-hours a liveaboard needs, whether 200Ah or 400Ah is enough, and how to convert Ah to kWh.
Every answer below is a starting range to check against your own measured load audit. Amp-hours cannot be compared across voltages, so convert to watt-hours before comparing any two systems.
How many amp-hours do I need for a liveaboard yacht?
There is no useful single Ah answer without knowing system voltage and daily energy use. Calculate the boat in kWh per day first. A liveaboard using 5kWh/day might investigate roughly 8 to 12kWh of storage, while a boat using 2kWh/day may be comfortable with much less. Then verify that solar, alternator and other charging can replace the energy.
Is 300Ah lithium enough for a cruising yacht?
A 12.8V 300Ah bank stores about 3.84kWh nominal. It can suit an efficient weekend or light coastal cruiser, but the decision should be based on measured daily consumption and recharge rate rather than boat length alone.
Is 400Ah lithium enough for a liveaboard?
At 12.8V, 400Ah is about 5.12kWh nominal. That can be useful for a modest liveaboard, but a high-comfort boat using 5 to 8kWh every day will have little reserve unless generation is strong and continuous.
Can I run a hair dryer from boat lithium batteries?
Yes with adequate inverter and BMS capacity. Hair dryers often draw 1,200 to 2,000W, creating high DC current on a 12V system. Runtime is usually short, so daily energy may be modest even though peak current is high.
How much power does a boat fridge use?
There is no fixed number. Compressor efficiency, insulation, box size, ambient temperature, thermostat setting and how often the lid or door opens all matter. Measure 24-hour Wh in realistic conditions for accurate sizing.
Does radar use a lot of battery?
Modern radar can be relatively efficient, but overnight operation adds up. Include radar transmit time, standby behaviour and display power in the passage energy audit.
Can I mix 100Ah and 200Ah lithium batteries in one bank?
It is generally cleaner to build a bank from matched batteries of the same model, capacity and age. Mixed batteries can have different BMS behaviour and current sharing. Follow manufacturer guidance.
Can I add a new lithium battery to an old lithium bank?
Possibly, but check manufacturer guidance, battery age, model, firmware and state of health. A new battery may not share current evenly with an aged unit.
Why are my lithium battery cables getting warm?
Possible causes include undersized conductors, loose or corroded terminals, poor crimps, excessive current or an underrated connection point. Heat is a warning sign and should be investigated rather than accepted as normal.
How much lithium do I need for a 40-foot yacht?
A 40-foot yacht might use anything from a modest 3 to 5kWh bank to a 10kWh or larger liveaboard system. Build a load audit before choosing capacity.
Is a bigger lithium bank always better?
No. Bigger banks cost more, add weight and can mask inadequate charging. The best size provides the required reserve while still being recoverable from the boat's realistic generation sources.
Is a 100Ah lithium battery enough for a boat?
It can be plenty for a day boat and insufficient for a liveaboard. Calculate daily Wh.
What size inverter can a 400Ah battery run?
Capacity does not answer that. Check BMS continuous current, peak current, cable, fuse and inverter current.
