MPPT Solar Controllers for Boats
Learn how to size MPPT controllers for marine lithium systems, including panel voltage, controller current, BMS integration and multiple arrays.
An MPPT controller converts solar-panel output into a controlled battery-charging profile.
Two current numbers matter
Solar input current: current from the array.
Battery output current: current delivered to the battery side.
A 1,000W array feeding a 12V battery can require a large controller output current.
At roughly 14V charging voltage:
1,000W / 14V = about 71A
At roughly 28V:
about 36A
At roughly 56V:
about 18A
This is another reason system voltage matters.
Controller sizing also depends on voltage
Check the array's open-circuit voltage, operating voltage, series string configuration, temperature-adjusted maximum voltage, short-circuit current and parallel-string current.
Never size an MPPT from watts alone.
Check the whole charging path
A charger setting is only one part of the result. On the boat, charging performance depends on the source, regulator, cable path, temperature, battery limits and what happens when the BMS asks the source to stop.
- Record sustained output after the alternator, controller or charger is hot—not only its nameplate rating.
- Verify voltage limits, temperature sensing and shutdown behaviour against the battery manufacturer’s instructions.
- Compare daily energy used with energy that can realistically be replaced in the available charging window.
