The advice can be wrong

Information on this site may contain mistakes, omissions, outdated requirements, incorrect assumptions or calculations that do not apply to your vessel. Do not assume that publication means a statement has been checked for your particular boat or remains current. Standards, laws, equipment specifications, manufacturer instructions and accepted industry practice can change after a page is reviewed.

General education, not vessel-specific advice

The content is general educational information. It is not electrical, engineering, legal, insurance, survey, fire-safety or purchasing advice for a particular vessel. It does not inspect your equipment, cable routes, battery compartment, charging sources, operating environment or crew requirements.

Marine electrical systems can produce extremely high fault currents. An error in battery selection, protection, charging, cable sizing, isolation, mounting or shutdown design can cause equipment damage, loss of essential services, fire, injury or death.

Before buying equipment or carrying out work:

1. check the current manufacturer instructions for every connected component;
2. verify the current edition of the standards and rules that apply to the vessel;
3. confirm insurer, marina and survey requirements in writing where relevant;
4. have the design and completed installation checked by a suitably qualified person; and
5. use a licensed marine electrician wherever the work requires one.

Calculators and examples

Calculators produce estimates from the values entered and from stated simplifying assumptions. They cannot identify an incorrect input, a transient load, temperature derating, an unsuitable cable route, a protection device with inadequate interrupt rating or a charging source that cannot sustain its nameplate output.

Treat calculator results as a starting range for discussion, not as a bill of materials or installation design. Cross-check results with measured vessel data and qualified judgement before relying on them.

Images and diagrams

Some photographs are illustrative and may be generated or edited. They communicate context and are not wiring diagrams, compliance evidence or endorsements of the equipment shown. Do not copy an installation from a photograph.
