LiFePO4 is widely chosen for boat house banks because it has favourable stability compared with several other lithium-ion chemistries, but no high-energy battery installation should be treated casually.

Main risk categories

  • electrical short circuit
  • over-current
  • over-charge
  • over-discharge
  • excessive temperature
  • charging outside allowed temperature range
  • physical damage
  • vibration
  • salt-water contamination
  • poor cable termination
  • loose terminals
  • incorrect charging profile
  • bypassed BMS protection
  • fire exposure
  • internal cell failure

Do not bypass the protection system

AMSA reported a severe commercial-vessel incident where a lithium battery system involved in an explosion had been charged in a way that bypassed battery-management protection.

The lesson is straightforward: never defeat the system designed to prevent unsafe charging.

Warning signs

Treat the following as serious:

  • unusual heat
  • swelling or bulging
  • casing distortion
  • leaking material
  • strong or unusual odour
  • hissing
  • popping
  • smoke
  • repeated unexplained BMS trips
  • evidence of salt-water ingress
  • impact or crush damage

A damaged lithium battery should not simply be reset and returned to service.

Fire response

Lithium battery fires can release toxic and flammable gases and can reignite. Fire and Rescue NSW advises evacuation and calling Triple Zero when a lithium-ion battery is smoking or on fire.

A large installed marine battery bank is not the same as a phone or tool battery. Emergency procedures should be specific to the vessel, battery chemistry, compartment and fire-protection system.


Practical context

Make the installation verifiable

A credible marine installation should be inspectable, documented and recoverable after a protection event. The battery label alone cannot show whether fault current, isolation, charging control, mounting and essential services have been addressed.

  1. Document cable sizes, protection ratings, isolation points, charging settings and BMS warning or shutdown logic.
  2. Confirm that terminals are protected, equipment is restrained and the location is suitable for heat, water and service access.
  3. Have the completed system commissioned and retain the drawings, settings, test results and equipment manuals aboard.
