Charging Marine Lithium Batteries from an Alternator


Learn how to charge a LiFePO4 house bank from a yacht engine alternator without overheating the alternator or losing BMS control.

Why lithium changes alternator behaviour

A lithium bank can maintain strong charge acceptance at a lower state of charge.

That can keep an alternator working near a high output for longer than it did with lead-acid batteries.

Potential consequences include alternator overheating, belt slip, belt dust, diode failure, regulator problems, high cable temperature and voltage problems if charging is disconnected incorrectly.

Common approaches

DC-DC charger

The alternator charges the starter battery or engine electrical bus. A DC-DC charger then sends a controlled amount of current to the lithium house bank.

Useful for simple refits, protecting stock alternators and mixed lead-acid start plus lithium house systems.

Externally regulated alternator

A purpose-designed regulator controls a suitable alternator using battery and alternator temperature information.

Useful for larger cruising systems and faster engine charging.

Integrated BMS alternator control

Some battery ecosystems can command or isolate charging through approved system components.

Practical context

Check the whole charging path

A charger setting is only one part of the result. On the boat, charging performance depends on the source, regulator, cable path, temperature, battery limits and what happens when the BMS asks the source to stop.

  1. Record sustained output after the alternator, controller or charger is hot—not only its nameplate rating.
  2. Verify voltage limits, temperature sensing and shutdown behaviour against the battery manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Compare daily energy used with energy that can realistically be replaced in the available charging window.
