Can I Install Lithium Batteries Myself in Australia?


How Australian electrical licensing applies to a DIY marine lithium installation, which parts of the job are the problem, and who to ask before you start.

The honest answer is: it depends on what part of the job you mean, which state you are in, and whether AC is involved anywhere — and the only authoritative answer comes from your state or territory electrical regulator, not from a website.

What follows is how to work out which question you are actually asking.

Electrical licensing is state and territory based

Australia does not have a single national rule that answers this. Electrical licensing is administered by each state and territory, and the requirements differ. A boat that moves between jurisdictions does not simplify matters.

Contact the electrical safety regulator in your state or territory and describe the actual work. That is the only reliable answer, and it is a free phone call.

The distinction that usually matters

Most of the difficulty in this question comes from conflating three different kinds of work:

Extra-low voltage DC. The house bank, DC distribution and DC loads. Licensing requirements here differ substantially from AC work, and in many contexts this is where owner installation is contemplated.

Anything involving AC. Inverter AC output, shore power, an inverter-charger's AC side, the boat's AC distribution. This is where licensed electrical work requirements bite hardest, and where the consequences of getting it wrong include electrocution and, in a marina, electrocution of somebody in the water.

Commercial vessels. A domestic commercial vessel is a different regime again, with AMSA and NSCV requirements on top.

If your project touches AC in any way, assume you need a licensed person for that part and confirm the rest.

Legality is not the only question

Three others matter as much:

  • Your insurer. Ask in writing whether owner installation is acceptable under your policy. See lithium batteries and boat insurance.
  • The standard. AS/NZS 3004.2 sets requirements for boat electrical installations. Meeting it is a matter of competence, not licensing, and it applies regardless of who does the work.
  • Resale and survey. An undocumented owner installation is a problem at survey. See used yacht lithium inspection.

The parts owners most often get wrong

If you do proceed with the DC work yourself, these are the failures that recur:

  • Over-current protection sized for working current rather than prospective fault current, or placed too far from the source of power.
  • Undersized cable, because the return path was not counted. Use the cable size calculator.
  • Alternator charging left unprotected, on the assumption that lithium is a drop-in replacement. See alternator charging.
  • No plan for BMS shutdown, so a protective disconnect takes out navigation or engine starting.
  • Crimps and terminations done with the wrong tool. A high-current joint that is not gas-tight becomes a hot joint.
  • Charger profiles left on a lead-acid setting, including equalisation modes that should never see a lithium bank.

A reasonable middle path

Many owners do the mechanical work — mounting, cable runs, conduit, labelling — and have a marine electrician design the system, specify the protection, terminate the high-current connections, do any AC work and commission the result. That keeps the cost down without leaving the dangerous parts to chance, and it produces documentation.
