How to Size BMS Current for a Boat
Why BMS current matters more than capacity, how to size it from your largest simultaneous load, and continuous vs peak.
Capacity tells you how long the bank may run. BMS current tells you how much current the battery can safely supply or accept at one time. A high-energy bank can still trip if the inverter, windlass support load or combined DC demand exceeds the BMS limit.
Key design checks
- Calculate continuous inverter DC current at low battery voltage, not only nominal voltage.
- Add large simultaneous DC loads such as pumps, thrusters if connected, compressors and electronics.
- Check charge-current limits separately from discharge limits.
- Allow for surge behaviour and the battery manufacturer's time limits.
