Marine Inverter Shutdown Troubleshooting


Diagnose inverter trips caused by low voltage, BMS current limits, cable voltage drop, surge loads and overheating.

Common causes include inverter overload, startup surge, BMS over-current, BMS low-voltage trip, undersized cables, poor crimps, loose terminals, high-resistance battery switches, hot fuse holders, inverter overheating and one parallel battery going offline.

If the battery monitor shows reasonable state of charge but the inverter reports low voltage under load, investigate the high-current path.

Voltage may be being lost in cables, lugs, fuses, switches, busbars or connections.

Diagnose before replacing parts

A shutdown or low-output symptom can begin in the battery, charging source, protection, cable path, monitor configuration or the load itself. Record evidence before resetting equipment so the original cause is not lost.

  1. Capture alarms, BMS history, state of charge, voltage at the battery and voltage at the affected equipment.
  2. Inspect for heat, looseness, corrosion, damage or water ingress before attempting another high-current test.
  3. Stop and isolate the system if there is swelling, unusual heat, odour, smoke, damaged cabling or repeated protection operation.
