Combining Solar, Alternator, Shore Power, Wind and Generator Charging


Coordinate solar, alternator, shore, wind, hydro and generator charging through a marine lithium BMS.

A cruising yacht may have five or six charging sources connected to one battery bank.

Every charge source needs an answer to the same questions:

  • What voltage does it target?
  • What current can it deliver?
  • Does it follow a lithium profile?
  • Can the BMS stop it?
  • Does it respond to high battery temperature?
  • Does it respond to low battery temperature?
  • What happens if a cell reaches high voltage?
  • Does it communicate with the battery?
  • Can it continue safely if another charger is active?

Larger integrated systems can use networked control so the BMS defines charge permission and charging limits across the inverter-charger, solar, alternator and other sources.

Check the whole charging path

A charger setting is only one part of the result. On the boat, charging performance depends on the source, regulator, cable path, temperature, battery limits and what happens when the BMS asks the source to stop.

  1. Record sustained output after the alternator, controller or charger is hot—not only its nameplate rating.
  2. Verify voltage limits, temperature sensing and shutdown behaviour against the battery manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Compare daily energy used with energy that can realistically be replaced in the available charging window.
