Running Induction Cooking from a Marine Lithium Battery
Calculate induction hob energy, inverter current and battery requirements for an electric galley on a sailboat or liveaboard.
Induction cooking is a high-power load but not necessarily a high daily-energy load if cooking time is short.
A hob drawing 1,500W for 30 minutes uses:
1,500 x 0.5 = 750Wh
At 12.8V and 90% inverter efficiency the current is about 130A. At 24V it is about 65A. At 48V it is about 33A.
This is why a high-energy galley often pushes a system toward higher DC voltage.
Turn the appliance into a daily energy figure
The peak wattage tells you whether the inverter and BMS can start the load. Runtime tells you what it does to the battery bank. Treat those as separate checks, then include conversion losses and the loads already running aboard.
- Measure typical watts and realistic hours per day, including standby use and cycling loads.
- Check startup surge and maximum simultaneous current against the inverter, BMS and cabling.
- Test the result against a poor-solar day and preserve a reserve for essential navigation and safety loads.
